Psilocybe aztecorum
Psilocybe Aztecorum Magic Mushrooms is a species of psilocybin-containing mushroom native to central Mexico, historically associated with the Aztec civilization. It is believed to be one of the sacred mushrooms referred to as teonanácatl, or “flesh of the gods,” used in spiritual and divinatory ceremonies.
Description of Psilocybe Aztecorum Magic Mushrooms:
- Cap (Pileus): The cap is convex to bell-shaped, measuring 1.5–2 cm in diameter. It is strongly hygrophanous, changing color based on hydration levels—from yellowish-brown to golden yellow when young, transitioning to whitish as it dries. Unlike many psilocybin mushrooms, the cap exhibits minimal bluing upon injury, with only slight green-blue staining at the margins. citeturn0search0
- Gills (Lamellae): The gills are adnate to adnexed, displaying colors from light violet-gray to dark violet-brown, sometimes with whitish edges. citeturn0search0
- Stem (Stipe): The stem is slender, measuring 5.5 to 7.5 cm in length and 3 to 4 mm in thickness. It is hollow, smooth, and silky-fibrillose, with a whitish to greyish coloration that may stain blue-green when handled or as it ages. A distinctive feature is the dense covering of white rhizomorphs at the base. citeturn0search0
Habitat and Distribution:
P. aztecorum is typically found at elevations between 3,200 to 4,000 meters in open woodlands dominated by Hartweg’s Pine (Pinus hartwegii). It grows gregariously in groups of 5 to 20 mushrooms on soil with wood debris, twigs, very rotten logs, or occasionally on pine cones. Fruiting occurs from August to October.
Psychoactive Properties:
This species contains the psychoactive compound psilocybin. While early analyses reported low concentrations, these were based on aged specimens. Fresh samples are considered to have moderate to high potency. Dosages between 2 to 4 grams of dried mushrooms are reported to produce significant psychoactive effects.
Conservation Status:
P. aztecorum faces threats due to habitat loss, particularly from the decline of Pinus hartwegii forests, which are projected to shrink significantly in the next 50 years due to climate change. Additionally, the harvesting of these mushrooms for recreational use poses a risk to their populations. Consequently, P. aztecorum is listed as “Threatened” under Mexico’s Norma Oficial Mexicana NOM-059-Semarnat-2010.
Note: The use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms is illegal in many jurisdictions. Always ensure compliance with local laws and regulations.
Psilocybe Aztecorum Magic Mushrooms is a species of powerful psychedelic mushrooms originating from Central Mexico. It is known to grow on decomposing wooden debris at high elevations. This species of magic mushrooms has been consumed by the Nahau people (better known as Aztecs) for centuries. Psilocybe Aztecorum has been referred to teonanacatl by 16th century Spanish explores, which means “sacred mushroom” or as “the flesh of the gods”. It is legendary for its spiritual use among the Aztecs and related tribes.
Unlike the more common Psilocybe Cubensis strains, the Psilocybe Aztecorum rarely bruises as a result of age or handling. They are known to be moderate to high in potency. This is an old school strain that was more common before Psilocybe Cubensis took over the scene. You too can experience what the Aztecs have for thousands of years.
